Wynona Wilson Obituary

Wynona Mae Wilson passed away April 14, 2024 with family by her side.
Wynona was born on November 20, 1926 in Texhoma, OK to  Louis and Vera Wilson who preceded her in death.

Wynona grew up during the depression in Texhoma, OK and Canton, KS with five brothers: Bill, Bob, Howard, Larry, Jerry and one sister Exie, all of which have preceded her in death, except for brother Larry.  She is also preceded in death by a son-in-law, Eugene LaBonte.

Wynona was married in 1949 to W.G Wilson they divorced in 1983.

Upon graduation from high school, Wynona worked at a cafe in Canton, KS for 25 cents an hour.  She went onto nurses training; and, since there was such a shortage of nurses during WWII the government gave out free scholarships. She obtained her RN degree in 1948, and worked as an RN for almost 50 years.  Part of her training was working on an Iron Lung Ward in California.  Wynona worked at several facilities in Albuquerque, New Mexico for about 12 years before moving to Canon City in 1968.    She worked at St. Thomas More Hospital for another 26 years.  After her retirement she still wanted to make a difference. She  would go in early in the mornings to make cinnamon rolls in the family store.  She also worked for Hospice caring for people and in turn Hospice cared for her until her passing.

Many of Wynona’s favorite pastimes were:  watching her grandsons sports activities, working in the yard and gardening, traveling, going to Cripple Creek and garage sales.  She also enjoyed watching the  Broncos and Rockies games, but most of all was spending time with her family.

Wynona touched so many lives; family, friends, coworkers and patients. She loved helping other people, she did it without accolades or need for anything  in return.

Those left to cherish Wynona’s memory are her five children: Kyanna (Loren) Reiswig, Gary Wilson, Kendra LaBonte (Joe Stott), Kayla Green, Kimly Wilson (Kate Connor).  Grandchildren Shannon Reiswig (Tyson Fausssone), Matthew LaBonte, Travis and Tyler Green (Amanda Schleicher), Chris Cash, honorary grandson Dr. Jeff Sarek, special neighbor Tammy DeWolfe and many nieces and nephews.

We would like to thank the nurses, especially the CNA’s at Skyline Nursing home for the compassionate care given to our mother; and Sangre de Cristo Hospice that was there for her and us until her passing.

Services will be held at Holt Funeral Chapel, 806 Macon, Canon City, CO  on April 19th at 11:00 a.m.  Interment will follow at Mountain Vale Cemetery., 1700 Chestnut, Canon City, Co.  In lieu of food and flowers, donations may be made to Sangre de Cristo Hospice.
