Betty June (Littrell) Coleman

June 26, 1932 ~ September 6, 2020 (age 88)

Obituary

Betty “June” (Littrell) Coleman died peacefully in her home on September 6, 2020 in Westcliffe, Colorado at the age of 88.  June was born on the 26th of June, 1932 to Herb and Goldie (Osborn) Littrell in Maxwell, New Mexico.  She was the third of eight children (Colleen, Myrtle, June, Sally, Mary, Nancy, Jim and Laurel).

At the age of fourteen she moved to Westcliffe, Colorado with her family.  She graduated from Custer County Schools in 1950.  After high school she moved to Pueblo, where she worked as a telephone operator for Mountain Bell.

She returned home to marry her high school sweetheart, the late John Coleman, on November 11, 1951.  Together they operated a hay and cattle ranch in the south end of the Wet Mountain Valley where they raised cattle and kids, Pat, Mike, Ed, Lee and Christe.  June and John were happily married for 58 years.

Through the years, they enjoyed many activities, they square danced for the High Country Swingers, camped in the mountains tending their sheep, and played countless games of cards, where she is still the reigning champion of Old Heck Granny (though she always kept score).  She enjoyed trips to Cripple Creek with her sisters and daughters.  She especially loved the annual Custer County Alumni banquet and visiting with lifelong friends.  She was a long time member of the Cattle Women and attended every annual Wet Mountain Stampede Rodeo.  June was a constant supporter of John, as he served as a three-term County Commissioner and community leader.  She prepared countless meals for ranch crews and worked long days in hay fields.  She enjoyed decades of sports games, horse shows and 4-H projects.  June’s family and friends were the heart of her life.  June Coleman is survived by her five children, 14 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
