David Showalter

David Showalter, literally, grew up in the photography business. He became a professional photographer at the age of seventeen. His adult life has been spent in law enforcement, with photography being an added benefit he brought to the badge. As a teenager, he helped his father document crime scenes, area fires, traffic accidents, and natural disasters. Before graduation from high school, he started doing wedding photography on his own. He picked up the overflow from his father, Ken’s photo business. Together, they photographed about 60 to 70 weddings a year. Entering the video field later in life, he has completed over 2,000 DVD projects. They have included adventure documentaries, becoming well known for these projects in the early 1990’s. He has also produced training films for various law enforcement agencies and, of course, many wedding videos in the area.

Officially, his business is known as Lighthouse Photography. The adventure documentary division is known as Mountain Memories Unlimited. Unofficially, David is known for his love of adventure and has been called by some, The Original. He filmed and produced documentaries recording Colorado history. Some of his films are on record. David was the only videographer allowed access to some of Colorado’s oldest and unknown history sites. He explored and documented little-known 4-wheel drive roads, mining, and railroad history sites. Well before the new popular survival, exploration, and reality TV shows were ever thought about.

He was inspired by God, in the middle of the night, to produce a faith-based film. The movie production team was named Solid Rock Films. In February of 2014, a script was written for the movie “A Town Without Faith”. Filming began in May of 2014 and was completed in November 2014. David, who does his own editing, began filming and continued through the year 2014. The movie finished the day before Christmas in 2014. This movie was filmed entirely in Colorado, with a cast of over 80 people, in a total of 45 locations. The cast members were recruited from local talent and attended six local churches.

David was a member of the police force for a large portion of his life. He worked for the Department of Corrections as well as the sheriff’s department. David enjoyed taking his children and grandchildren to the prison museum in Cañon City. After retiring from the police force, David decided that he wanted to climb Mount Bross, a 14-foot mountain in Colorado. David took this journey alone and was able to complete the journey on foot.

David is survived  by his wife of 50 years, Cheryl. David is also survived by his three daughters, Laura (Troy), Kathy (Kelly), and Kristin (Gerald). Laura’s children are Shane, great-grandchild Aidan, Jon (Miranda), great-grandchild Everly, Heaven, great-grandchild Jake, Joseph, Joshua, Caidan, and Willow. Kathy’s children, Joel (Lexi), great-grandchild Tristan, Christopher, Amber (Austin), and great-grandchild Wyatt. Kristin’s children are Haley (Tristan) and Ainsley (Riley).

David is preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Glenna. He is also proceeded in death by his sister, Evelyn (Roland) Her children, Donna, Deana and Daryl survive David in death.

A graveside service will be at 2p.m. on Friday, July 31, 2026 at Lakeside Cemetery in Canon City.
