Edith Cook Obituary

Edith Cook of Canon City, CO, passed away May 8th, 2023, in Parker, CO, after a long history of brain bleeds. She was 86 years old.

Edith Ann Carson was born November 18, 1936, to George and Gladys Carson of Denver, CO. Although raised in Denver, she had a strong desire to move away from the city. She graduated from Colorado State University in June 1960 for Secretarial Administration, and on June 4th married her farmer husband of 62 years, Charles Cook. Edith used her degree to teach typing in Penrose, CO, and later to help administer the family business, Cookdale Feeds.

Finally in the countryside, Edith raised her four children alongside countless cattle, sheep, dogs, cats, horses, and a llama. She also looked after her brother George after a debilitating car accident, as well as her mother, bringing both to live in Canon City.

Edith was a lover of classical music (playing and listening), a talented seamstress, an avid collector of duck art, a prolific gardener, and the family genealogist. She was also a devout Lutheran, attending church, helping with potlucks, teaching Sunday School, and always looking forward to Bible Study Fellowship. Active in 4H, she helped her children sew, raise animals, train horses and dogs, and learn about wildlife … which more than once resulted in a career. Also amazing was the tight-knit Supper Club which met monthly, practically unbroken, for 53 years.

Although she often stated her “world ended at the railroad track” (where the farm ended), she was in fact the central hub of the Cook world. As children and grandchildren spread to California, Idaho, Denver, and Utah, she was able to glue everyone together with her thoughtful conversations. Eventually, she visited all those places and then added Montana, Maine, Canada, England, Vietnam, South Korea, Singapore, and China. These memories served her well as health and eyesight diminished, but friendships and lively phone calls never did.

Edith was preceded in death by her parents, brother, and several close friends. She is survived by her husband, Charles, 88; and her four children: Cheryl, 60 (Conrad) Lindberg, Dane, 59 (Patti) Cook, Linda, 54 (Jim) Hitt, and Tom Cook, 51. She is also survived by four grandchildren: Leah, Dalton, Kaylie, and Ely Louise.
