Jan Hildebrand Obituary

Dr. Jan Hildebrand was born July 12, 1938, in Brush, Colorado to Dr. Paul R. and Anne C. Hildebrand, joining his older brothers, Peter and Paul. The family enjoyed all things outdoors especially hunting, fishing and arrowhead hunting.

During his adolescence Jan participated in football, wrestling and track. After high school, he initially went to the Colorado School of Mines on a wrestling scholarship where he won the Rocky Mountain Regional Wrestling Tournament as a freshman.

After transferring to the University of Colorado at Boulder he graduated with a BA in Geology in 1961. Jan enjoyed working on oil rigs and shared many stories of his roughnecking days. After a change of heart, he decided to follow in his father’s footsteps attending the University of Colorado School of Medicine, graduating in 1965 with an MD degree. Following a year internship at LA County Harbor General Hospital, he was drafted into the US Army.

His two years in the Army included one year in Vietnam as a Battalion Surgeon where he earned the Combat Medic Badge, Bronze Star, and the rare Soldiers’ Medal for heroism not involving combat. Over the years the family heard numerous stories of his time in Vietnam, as nothing prepares a surgeon like the nearly constant trauma of war. Following discharge, he spent 4 years at the University of Colorado Medical System in general surgery where he finished his training.

Jan enjoyed growing up in a small town and wanted to start a practice where he could make a difference.  Dr. Ley recruited him from CU and upon visiting Canon City, he fell in love.  He moved to Canon City in 1972 and began his practice in general surgery where he remained until his retirement in 1998. Dr. Hildebrand was a well-respected and much-loved doctor. The family couldn’t go anywhere without running into someone who would share a story about him delivering a baby or operating on a family member.

Dr. Hildebrand was also involved in organized medicine and served on the governing board of the Colorado Medical Society. He was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and served as President of the Colorado Chapter and 6 years as Colorado’s Governor at Large to the American College of Surgeons.

In 1976, he married his wife Judi, who was the love of his life. Together, they raised a family, traveled, built a French Cottage, and when necessary, Judi was his nurse at the office. He enjoyed working in his amazing garden, tying flies and going on walks. He was a loving father, never missing a ball game or school event. Once grandchildren arrived, he became affectionately known as Papa.  He and his wife Judi, now known as Nana, did their best to attend every event possible. He was proud of all his grandchildren and loved to brag about them.

Everyone will miss Papa greatly. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Paul and Pete, and sons Blaine and Casey. He is survived by his wife Judi, children Tammy Stringari (Greg), Andy Hildebrand (Erica), Brad Hildebrand, and Paula Gewarges (Nofal), and 9 amazing grandchildren.

At his request, the service will be private.  He never liked to be the center of attention unless he was in the operating room.
