Richard Eugene Detlefsen, born on January 22, 1935, in Clinton, IA, to Moritz Detlefsen and Helen (Cornelius) Detlefsen, peacefully passed away on July 20, 2026 at his home in Cañon City, CO at 91 years old. Richard was surrounded by the love of his family as he embarked on his eternal journey.
Richard was united in marriage to his beloved wife, Linda Lou (Cross) Detlefsen on August 2, 1957, and together they shared 67 years of faithful and loving marriage before her passing in January 2024.
Richard is survived by his cherished children: Ric (and wife Lynelle) Detlefsen, Jewell Melillo, and LaVonne (and husband Warren) Wells, along with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren who brought immense joy to his life. He is also survived by his sister, Delores. Richard was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Linda; his parents, Moritz and Helen; and siblings Leonard, Robert, Shirley, Beverly, and Betty Lou.
Richard answered a call to Christian ministry, graduating from Open Bible College in Des Moines, Iowa, where he trained for pastoral service. He went on to serve as an Open Bible, and then, Assembly of God pastor throughout the 1960s and 1970s, faithfully shepherding Iowa congregations in Cambridge, Red Oak, and Norwood. He was known for loving those he pastored and leading them to faithfully follow Jesus Christ.
Richard served for one term of enlistment in the United States Army. He also worked as an auto mechanic and machinist. He worked for over 20 years at Portec in Cañon City, CO as a machinist and retired from that company.
Richard deeply loved his family and was appreciated for his honest and supportive approach in all his relationships. He loved to have fun and play with others. And he was always ready to help those in need.
A memorial service will be held on July 25, 2026 at 1:00 PM at Holt Family Funeral Home – 806 Macon Avenue, Cañon City, CO, 81212.
