Wesley Ferrell Connett passed away on April 18, 2021. He was born on July 27, 1941 to Tommey and Arliene (Brown) Connett in Camden County, Missouri.
Wesley grew up in Lebanon, Missouri. He had 17 years combined service in the Missouri, and Kansas National Guard. The rest of the time, he was very proud to serve as a correctional officer for 35 years. He started working at the department of corrections in Missouri. After a few years, he accepted a correctional officer position in Kansas, where Wesley met his wife, Jean, who was also a guard at the facility. Then they moved to Penrose, Colorado where they spent the remainder of their years together.
Wesley loved God and The Great Spirit, and would always say; “May the good Lord and The Great Spirit bless and protect you.” He was proud of his Choctaw roots. His greatest joys were being a husband, father and grandfather. Writing stories and poetry was a passion of Wesley’s. He often wrote under pen names, and submitted works to both Kirkwood Memorial Presbyterian Church and Desert Waters Correctional Outreach. Wesley was a generous man who cared deeply for all living things. He always made sure to send you away with something sweet to eat. He enjoyed war books and westerns, especially the heroes in every story. He was a bit of a hero himself, always willing to give away his last dollar for someone in need. His kindness was shown through his admiration and care for military veterans, for whom he would make what he called totem crosses and keychains. He never charged for them, and continued to make them for over 10 years.
After the death of his wife, Wesley’s health deteriorated. During these times, grandson Alan was his primary caretaker and daughter Angela helped with his care until ultimately, he was reunited with Jean in the hands of God and the Great Spirit.
Wesley is survived by his daughter, Angela Bushman; son, John Connett and wife, Kris of Minnesota; grandsons, Tommy Tussing, Kevin Bethea, Alan Trowbridge and Wesley Meyer; granddaughter Bobbie Meyer, twelve other grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren and ten great-great-grandchildren; other relatives, and many friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Roberta Jean; his parents, Arliene and Tommey Connett; his brother, Cecil Connett; daughter, Diana Meyer, and his granddaughter, Courtney Primosh.
Memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, April 30, 2021 at Kirkwood Memorial Presbyterian Church, 407 5th Avenue, in Penrose.
